Provimi

The Provimi building—once a factory for animal feed production—stands as another emblem of Katendrecht’s industrial past. Built in the mid-20th century, the factory was part of the broader agri-industrial economy that once defined the waterfront, dealing with the production and export of animal nutrition products.

Following the relocation of industrial operations, the building sat vacant for years before becoming part of Katendrecht’s wave of regeneration. Rather than demolishing it, developers and planners chose to preserve its strong industrial character and adapt it to a new era of creativity and innovation.

Today, Provimi has been repurposed into a hub for creative industries, housing design studios, small businesses, and experimental projects. Its rough concrete shell, exposed structural elements, and tall factory windows provide an atmospheric setting that attracts makers, artists, and entrepreneurs looking for authentic, flexible space.

The transformation of Provimi reflects a key trend in urban redevelopment: retaining the DNA of a place while reprogramming it for contemporary use. It now stands as a quieter but powerful example of how old industrial buildings can become engines of new ideas.
